Due to the added stress that goes along with traveling across international borders with fire-arms, we highly recommend hunters to make use of a clearing agency in Johannesburg. On your behalf the clearance company will arrange the required permits and documentation, this service also includes meeting you at arrivals and assisting you through the process.
Upon arrival in South Africa you will be required to fill in the SAPS 520 form, requesting weapon and ammunition specifications.
You will also need your passport, return airline ticket, and proof of ownership of the rifle(s), along with a letter of invitation, which we will provide.
Should you opt not to use a clearing agency, you will need to apply for the pre-issued import / export permit.
To apply for this you will need the following documents:
Ammunition must be in a separate lockable ammunition case, and the bolt must be removed from the rifle, but can be in rifle case. SAPS regulations require that all firearms have to be in a lockable case, separate from the ammunition. Ammunition weight cannot exceed 17 lbs.
Upon arrival, once passed passport control, proceed to the SAPS office (opposite carousel 7-8) to sign for the release of your rifle. After collecting your luggage, proceed on the green line through customs.
Your firearms and ammunition will be checked along with the pre-issued temporary import / export permit.
We strongly recommend at least a 3-4hour time period between landing at JHB International and your connecting flight to Port Elizabeth
